No furnishing fairs, no shows, no exhibitions. Nevertheless, the German Wallpaper Institute (DTI) has tracked down the current wallpaper trends for 2021. What's coming, what's staying? The most important must-haves are shown, as well as popular designs that will continue to accompany us.

Every year in January, manufacturers present the new wallpaper collections. Unlike usual, however, they cannot be shown at the leading interior design fairs in 2021. What will remain, what will come? The German Wallpaper Institute has summarised the current trends for the wall and shows the most important must-haves for 2021. In focus: motifs and colours that define the use of the rooms and promote creativity, relaxation or activity. The wallpaper change for the new living happiness can begin!

In 2021, soft, matt tones are introduced and all shades of nature come to the fore. The colour scheme of the new wallpapers ranges from pastel greys, browns, berries and pinks to a sunny yellow palette, green, turquoise and blue. Very dark colour schemes are also gaining ground. In stark contrast, filigree black and white wallpapers are used on the walls, which are definitely worth a look and can hardly be surpassed in terms of coolness. The colour tones can be found in almost all current trend motifs, so that all individual pattern and design preferences - floral, geometric, neutral or retro - are covered.

The use of the room plays an important role. Do you need a serious look for the home office or a creative zone for the children? Do you want to create a relaxing atmosphere for sleep or yoga or an interesting combination for the living room or the entrance hall? We decide how we want to live. With new patterns and colours, the wallpapers 2021 create a home to "feel at home" in every situation and regardless of the number of square metres or rooms.

WHAT'S COMING?

1. abstract: botany meets geometry
Unusual looks by mixing floral patterns with strict geometric shapes
Almost all manufacturers are continuing the unbroken "Urban Jungle" megatrend and satisfying the longing to bring nature home. New is the expressive combination of floral motifs with geometric patterns - an interesting trend in the mega-trend. Large-format flowers are broken up and recombined by diamonds, circles or lines. Lines cross or make the pattern look like a puzzle in tile form. This is how both worlds come into contact and form a modern match of the most popular patterns in the wallpaper sector. These wallpapers are particularly effective on large surfaces in the living room or hallway.

2. as if painted: new expression for popular shapes
Motifs that look like sketches, illustrations, naïve watercolours or oil paintings by old masters and give the wall an artistic touch.
With floral, geometric and retro motifs, the latest designs look like painted works of art. Organic shapes like inkblots in pastel watercolours are a real surprise here, evoking childhood memories and radiating a carefree calm. Likewise, motifs in the style of illustration come onto the scene. The abstract Urban Jungle motifs appear more timeless, take a step back in colour intensity and set the stage for a place of relaxation. The new murals push pictures and photos off the walls and reduce the decoration of the rooms to an absolute eye-catcher.

3. filigree lines: wallpapers in black and white
They do without colour and convey naturalness with style.
If you haven't been a wallpaper fan so far, you will fall in love with the cool designs in black and white this year at the latest. Whether elegant in an Art Deco look with delicate, geometric lines, imaginative and exotic in shades of grey or abstract as if drawn with a pencil - the new wallpaper patterns do not need colour to unfold their radiance. They love harmony and yet surprise with their extraordinary spatial effect. The best thing is that every piece of furniture looks good in front of them. So even the furnishing layman becomes a decorating pro.

WHAT STAYS?

1. imaginative jungle motifs with plants and animals in intense colours
Palm fronds, banana leaves, summer flowers, tropical bird species - there's still plenty going on on the wall. In 2019, the wild jungle has already spread into our living room and is now becoming more and more imaginative. Green is the predominant basic colour, it calms the mind but there are also very bright colours, shades of grey and pastel. The best thing is that the motifs also satisfy a little wanderlust.
2. generation of haptic stimuli through textile surfaces and structures.
Touch is sensual. The new luxury wallpapers with their noble surfaces literally demand to be touched. They glitter like stardust, seduce and caress with applications and textiles. As in the entire wallpaper world, the range is huge. With the sensual seduction on the wall, the awareness of our home is also changing, because when was the last time the wall in the living room was caressed?

3. lookalikes in 3D
Besides the trend towards natural motifs, other attempts at deception are popular. Natural materials and surfaces are imitated and recreated 1:1. Photo wallpapers from the digital printer can now reproduce the perfect illusion even more faithfully. The looks of brick, concrete or iron are essential stylistic elements for fans of industrial, architectural style or minimalism. Wallpapers in marble looks are an impressive decorative element in the bathroom, for example. Wall coverings are of course also suitable in this room (see product information).

4. geometric shapes
Diamonds, circles, octagons - the wallpaper becomes a formality. This year, on the one hand, large-format geometry comes in retro colour combinations. On the other hand, elegant formations of the Art Deco era are on show, mostly in gold on dark backgrounds. A symmetrical arrangement of elements, as used in the trendy Skandi style, is offered in monochrome colour combinations.
